Consciousness

The state or capacity of awareness and subjective experience, including the experience of thoughts, sensations, perceptions, emotions, and a sense of self.

Consciousness is a central concept in metaphysics and philosophy of mind concerned with the nature of awareness and subjective experience. Philosophical inquiry asks how consciousness arises, whether it can be fully explained through physical processes, whether it is a fundamental feature of reality, and how it relates to mind, matter, identity, perception, causation, and the Mind-Body Problem. Different metaphysical positions, including materialism, idealism, dualism, and monism, offer different explanations for the place of consciousness within reality.
