Mean Node

A calculated position of the Lunar Nodes based on their average motion, smoothing out the small irregular variations reflected by the True Node.

The Mean Node is a calculated position of the Lunar Nodes that represents their average motion over time rather than tracking every small irregular variation in the Moon’s orbital movement. Because the Nodes do not move at a perfectly uniform rate, the Mean Node smooths those fluctuations to produce a more even calculated position. It can therefore differ slightly from the True Node, which follows the Moon’s actual nodal motion more closely. In astrology, the Mean Node may be used to determine the positions of the North Node and South Node in a natal chart. As with the True Node, the distinction concerns the method of calculation rather than a different symbolic meaning.
