The Modalities are one of the primary ways astrology organizes the twelve Zodiac Signs according to how their qualities tend to operate or respond. The three Modalities are Cardinal, Fixed, and Mutable, with four Signs belonging to each group. Cardinal Signs are commonly associated with initiation, movement, and beginning new activity; Fixed Signs with stability, persistence, concentration, and maintaining what has been established; and Mutable Signs with adaptation, flexibility, transition, and responsiveness to changing conditions. In a natal chart, astrologers may consider the relative emphasis of the Modalities as part of the broader chart pattern rather than interpreting any one Modality in isolation. The Modalities work alongside the Elements to provide another way of understanding differences in temperament, expression, and response among the Zodiac Signs.
