Teleology

A metaphysical concept concerned with purpose, ends, goals, or directedness, especially the idea that processes or events may be understood in relation to an outcome toward which they tend.

Teleology is a concept in metaphysics and philosophy concerned with explanations based on purpose, goals, ends, or directedness. A teleological explanation asks not only what caused something to occur, but also whether a process, structure, or action can be understood in terms of what it is oriented toward or intended to accomplish. Teleology is closely connected with causation, agency, purpose, change, necessity, possibility, and theories about the order and structure of reality.
